5 Warning Signs You Need New Brake Pads

Brake pads are a wear item by design, they are meant to be replaced periodically. The risk is not that they wear out, it is ignoring the warning signs until the discs are damaged too, turning a simple pad swap into a more expensive repair. Here are five signs worth acting on.

1. A high-pitched squeal when braking

Most brake pads include a small metal wear indicator that is designed to squeal against the disc once the friction material gets thin. This is not damage yet, it is an intentional early warning. Treat it as a signal to book a check soon rather than an emergency.

2. A grinding or growling noise

If squealing progresses to a grinding, growling sound, the pad material has likely worn through completely and metal is now contacting metal. This can score the brake disc, turning a pad-only job into a pads-and-discs job. Stop driving on it as soon as reasonably possible.

3. A soft, spongy, or low brake pedal

A pedal that sinks further than usual before engaging can point to worn pads, but can also mean air in the brake lines or a fluid leak, both of which are more serious. Do not assume it is only the pads, have it checked properly.

4. The car pulls to one side when braking

Uneven pad wear, a caliper that is sticking, or a collapsed brake hose on one side can all cause the car to pull under braking. 5. Visible thinning through the wheel spokes

You can often see the brake pad through the gaps in an alloy wheel. Healthy pad material is usually at least 6 to 7mm thick. If it looks like a thin sliver, less than 3mm, it is time to order replacements.
